Leah Brunner: Secret or Shutout

 DC Eagles Book #4

I've been following this series for awhile and have been waiting for Bruce's story he's the handsome Goalie for the team and a total teddy bear, I just adored him in previous books.

Bruce and Farrah meet at a bar they don't exchange names or any personal information but are drawn to each other in other ways they have a great night of conversation and things get a little cozier in the corner booth leading to some sizzling off the charts kissing... then nothing they go their separate ways thinking they will never see each other again.

The next morning comes and Bruce goes over to his best friend (and Team Captain's) home where he encounters his brunette beauty from the night before turns out friends live in nanny/sister and his mystery lady are one in the same and even though he knows that she is off limits as his team mates sister... he can't get her off his mind and he needs to find a way for her to give him a chance.

There are some time jumps involved in this story, Farrah at the time of their meeting was in a bad space after separating from her toxic ex-husband and continued to struggle with her thoughts of self doubt and wondering if she could ever trust a man again since the last time turned into a disaster, once finding out that her mystery man is her brother's team mate she is focused on trying to shut him out and not let anything more happen between them choosing to focus on the party planning business she runs with a friend where she bakes and watching her niece.  But the more she tries to shut the door on him the more he tries to force his way through and he's a big guy with a big heart it's hard for Farrah not to let her guard down around him when he shows up for her even when she's not expecting it which is more than she can say for her old friend group who ditched her when the divorce papers were signed.

Farrah in a moment (or several) of weakness towards our loveable goalie wants spend more time with him... but it has to be a secret for now especially when playoffs are involved and she isn't sure how her brother would take the news or how it would mess with the team dynamics she doesn't want to be responsible for the Eagles losing games due to unneeded personal drama.

Naturally our pair can only keep their secret for so long before things are revealed and tempers flare, Farrah again tries to close Bruce out thinking it's for his own good and he is a wreck over it, will Farrah ever be able to trust that Bruce isn't her toxic ex, that Bruce is the real deal and will be there for her even through the worst of times, he has shown up time and time again for her that should count for something.

I get the brother's best friend trope and do enjoy those but when they are older (later 20's early 30's) I just don't feel that hiding it for as long as they did was necessary just tell the brother already they are all adults and he will get over it... he loves them both.

I really loved Bruce but I struggled with Farrah at times and felt that I didn't completely see their relationship building in a natural way from the pages, it spends a lot of time focused on Farrah trying to ignore Bruce, Farrah's fertility issues and not wanting to talk to Bruce about how he feels about those issues (which I don't think he would have been opposed to other options: adoption, surrogate) and once they finally come together it was focused on sneaking around and hiding what was going on from their friend group so it wouldn't get back to her brother.

Bruce has to work really hard to get Farrah to give him a chance... at times too hard to the point where they didn't really spend as much of the book actually together as they should have and that was disappointing because I was really looking forward to Bruce's story.

I got the audible version for this and it was read with dual POV male/female the female sections were kind of off putting for me because she always sounded like she was about to break down in tears which I guess some of Farrah's sections felt like that while reading the book so that's kind of accurate.

Have you read this series?  What did you think?  Which book was your favorite?
