Ellie (FMC) has been working hard to reach her goals her whole life she has been a shining star in a male centered sport Hockey but she's just as qualified as any man when it comes for going what she wants and what she wants now is the assistant coach spot for an NHL team when she finally lands her dream job she feels nothing could possibly go wrong... or could it?
Ellie goes to meet who she'll be working with and the head coach is Lincoln Scott her childhood enemy... how could this be happening right now? To make matters worse the other assistant coach keeps throwing barbs at her like she didn't earn her spot just like he did... only when she expects to not get much help from her head coach when it comes to this matter he keeps proving her wrong... maybe he is on her side after all.
Lincoln has been fighting demons his whole life coming from a broken home with an abusive father Ellie was at the heart of some of his problems... and seeing her again in person is bringing back old feelings that he has been trying to push down for years but even with these thoughts coming back to haunt him it's not her fault that he feels that way and she keeps proving how hard of a worker she is, she is a brilliant player and has what it takes to help re-shape this team and help push it in the direction in needs to go. Ellie has been battling things in her own life and hasn't had the dream life that everyone seems to think.
Working in close proximity there are other feelings coming into play it is no longer animosity but something stronger and most definitely not work related thoughts. Ellie and Lincoln try to fight what's happening between them and with the help of their best friends trying to push them closer together and their own growing feelings the heat between them becomes a full blown inferno.
But what happens now? What are they? --> friends with benefits and a secret? since their relationship can't get out to the public Ellie is already struggling to prove that she can make it in a man's world the last thing she needs is for people to know that she's in a relationship with her boss. If they can't make their relationship public are they doomed to fail before it even begins?
If you are in your Hockey Era this is a nice change up with our FMC also being a coach the author knows hockey which is also a plus for our hockey book. The slow burn felt super slow at times and some of the chapters were a bit repetitive back to back with dual POV and telling the story from Ellie's side in one chapter and the same story from Lincoln's side in the next it felt like the story wasn't moving forward as well as it could have (slower/stilted pacing) and leading to the book being longer than it needed to be.
I enjoyed the interactions with the side characters and I'm looking forward to the next in the series.
*Hockey Romance *Childhood Rivals *enemies --> More *Co-workers *Secret relationship *Forbidden relationship *NHL *boss *MMC dealing with PTSD *Dual POV *slow burn *spice
*leads in their 30s *some miscommunication *first book for this author
