Lia Riley: Puck & Prejudice

 2025:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/208539323

Tucker Taylor is a NHL Hockey Goalie he loves his job and he loves his team the Austin Regals after being benched for health issues he takes a trip to England to visit his sister Nora after a series of unfortunate events that leads to a motor vehicle accident he ends up in an icy pond not able to get to the surface just when he thinks things are over for him he wakes up in a pond in the summer and shortly after finds out that while he's in the same spot he was just in he has traveled a really long way... all the way back to 1812.

Tucker even though he wakes up in the past and isn't sure what to do manages to meet Elizabeth Wooddash who is thankfully willing to help him and believes that she has come across a time traveler when he shows her photos on his cell phone... also no one would dress like this in her current time what is he even wearing?  weird shoes, his shirt has his name on the back... no one else can see any of this or he will be in trouble and she will too by association.

A quick friendship blossoms between this unlikely pair and maybe they can even help each other Lizzy is considered an on the shelf spinster and a burden to her obnoxious family who just care about wealth and social status, Tuck needs someone to guide him in this time he really doesn't want to get burned for being a witch... do they do that in this time period or was that over awhile ago?  Well at least he's good at blocking a puck even if he can't remember history.

Lizzy enlists her cousin and good friend Georgie who is a wealthy widow and their friend Jane (Austin) to help come up with a plan on how to help Tuck return to his own time and what to do while working on figuring out how to get him back... Plan: maybe Tuck could marry Lizzy it would be temporary it would get her family off her back about her single status and once he does eventually leave she can become a "widow" and live with her cousin Georgie in peace... easy no one gets hurt it's just pretend.

Naturally they can't spend that much time together without feelings forming, some drama occurs when Lizzy's brother finds out about the trip to Gretna Green and tries to stop them only to find out it's too late.  Lizzy and Tuck have to face the music with her mother and her mother's husband (second husband not Lizzy and her brother's father) and Tuck now faces issues since his now father in law fought in a war against the American's and doesn't think too kindly of them.  Will Lizzy's family ever be able to accept Tuck?

Will Tuck ever be able to return home and now more importantly will he be able to leave his wife now that he finds himself falling in love with her?  To complicate matters he had been diagnosed with Cancer and the treatment worked he is healthy now but what if his illness returns he can't fight it without modern medicine what would happen if he got sick in 1812?

Lizzy is falling for her husband which is a complete disaster... when they find out how to get Tuck home how can she ever enjoy being a "widow" when she knows that never being able to see him again will break her heart she doesn't belong in the future her friends are here life as she knows it is in her own time... but Tuck won't be.

My thoughts on this -->  may contain spoilers

I started this book thinking it would be a cute time travel hockey romance... maybe our lead guy will teach people in the past to play hockey that would be really fun to read about.  --> if you want that to happen it doesn't besides him mentioning multiple times throughout the book that he is a goalie for the NHL team there is 0 hockey in the book until the last few chapters.  There was really no need for him to be a hockey player if it was not even really used for the story he could have been a plumber since the job didn't really matter, also it's weird that the cover doesn't have him wearing goalie gear.

Too much time in the book is spent with either Tuck explaining modern things to Lizzy or Lizzy explaining 1812 situations to Tuck (what a blacksmith does, how you brush your teeth etc...) this becomes a bit of a slog to get through... we as the reader know what panties are and a dentist we don't need the definitions of them.

I was able to finish the book and it was a cute romance at times between our couple but I really felt so much of the story was definitions of what things were it took me a bit to get into the book and I don't know how the ending would work long term... it doesn't seem like a very reliable plan.

Tuck nicknames Lizzy pocket rocket

Tuck doesn't really have a curiosity for what surrounds him in the past so there wasn't really a good interaction between him and that time line

I don't see how Tuck didn't know the name of the book Pride & Prejudice...even if he is a hot jock he would have had to be living under a rock to not have heard of it especially when his sister is a Jane Austin enthusiast... so to have Tuck come up with the name of Jane's book not already knowing that was the name of the book 😦.  I will end my thoughts here I think this will give you enough of an idea of what you are getting into if you end up reading the book.
