Willa has lived a very sheltered life as the only daughter of a billionaire, she had a touch of freedom once as a child when she met a boy (Nathan) from the streets who took her out of the bounds of her fenced in space she felt free with him they went to a broken down home and danced under the shimmering lights from broken glass, he left her shortly after returning her home and even though she never saw him again he left a lasting impression on her by giving her a first kiss and a special bracelet that she even to this day keeps hidden in her hair. 

Willa's father has kept her so sheltered that she is not even allowed to have contact with her maternal grandmother who has managed to get a letter to her through her house keeper, her grandma says she has things she wants to say about her mother and father and would like to see her but will her dad let her go? 

Fast forward to later that evening at Willa's 19th birthday party where she still rarely leaves the safety of her home, at her party while looking like a beautiful princess she receives the worst phone call anyone would ever receive... there is a sharp shooter in the area with their aim on her father and if she doesn't do exactly as asked they will kill her father immediately.  

Willa not wanting any harm to come to her father or anyone else at the party leaves the safety of everything she knows to venture alone and disguised where a true nightmare situation begins she is now being held hostage on a clipper ship with an unknown amount of dangerous men (who all hate her father for a reason unknown to her) in the ocean... on top of this she struggles with PTSD flash backs from when she was a little girl and the day that she lost her mother.  

Willa frightened and alone is unsure of how she will get out of the worst situation she has ever been in and wonders what will happen to her along the way will she be released?  especially when she was able to get the blindfold off and now she has seen her captors what is to stop any one of them from just getting rid of her at sea once they get the ransom?  One of her captors is so familiar she has thought of him often and the freedom she felt briefly while she was with him as children why would her Nathan take her hostage?  Her father is a good man why does the crew hate him so much?   

This is a story of survival but also a story of growth Willa with nowhere else to go begins to get to know the crew better and also discovers that her life as she knows it might not be the way it seems.  This book kept me turning pages wanting to find out what would happen to Willa and even the rest of the crew who seemed to not be as bad as they initially seem.  

There really isn't much romance to this book it is more of a suspense with wondering how our girl will get out of this situation and if her dad is going to come through with meeting the demands the crew has given to him for her release, as to what the demands are the readers are just in the dark about them as Willa.  I had to take some breaks while reading this book as it had some tough subject matter to read about (including PTSD, abduction/being held hostage, starvation, discussions of death of a loved one) if you are sensitive to any of these topics consider this prior to reading the book.    

The original story is in German and has been translated to English it did lead to some awkward sentences at times but I didn't feel it took away from the story.  Sometimes the story got a little bit too detailed with certain things (like how much things cost)... like I didn't really need to know she was wearing $1,000 dollar panties when she had been taken captive.  

I picked this up as an ARC read but I wish that I had realized beforehand that there was going to be a cliffhanger I would have rather read the book once the second one was out already so I could finish the story and find out what happens with Willa, Nathan and the rest of the crew.  The second book appears to be out on 9/6/25 so it looks like I won't have to wait too long.
