Haven is back in her home town after living in London for the last 10 + years she is trying to settle in to being back into the town she never felt like she belonged and is working at her grandmothers bakery with possible plans to stay in town and take over so her grandma can retire... while working in the bakery tragedy strikes when the kitchen catches on fire due to faulty wiring to make matters worse who should come to her rescue but Axel her super hot ex-best friend and hometown firefighter hero.
Haven thought things would never change between her and Axel they were best friends and together all the time in high school but a game of 7 minutes in heaven leads to friends pushing past the boundaries into the unknown... especially since at the time she was going to be leaving for London to begin her training within a few months. After the move Axel never responded to any of her messages and while she has missed their friendship she also can't stand to see him it brings back the pain of losing her friend and she doesn't know why, what happened? Why did he ghost her?
Axel having a lot of personal life issues at that time including the fact that he was falling in love with his best friend and he knew that he could never hold her back from chasing the dreams she had been talking about for ages being young and hurting he felt it better to cut off all communication, unfortunately seeing her again now even years later the pull he has to this woman is undeniable.
Even while Axel is being a jerk to Haven he still wants to protect her and wants the best for her, she ends up enlisting him to help repair the bakery... but how can he be around her so much without wanting more, she is driving him wild just by being herself.
Haven is having some old feelings stir being around her super hot, super muscular ex-best friend... seriously how could he have gotten hotter since the last time she saw him? So when Axel starts a silly truth or dare game with her via text (and she has never been one to turn down that game) she can't resist and this leads to both of them wanting more... even if it's temporary.
No wait it really needs to be temporary Axel can't let his heart break again when she returns to London she clearly doesn't want more and even if he can't admit it out loud and obviously he can't admit it to Haven...maybe he hasn't changed his playboy ways or settled down with any woman over the years she has been absent from his life because only one woman has held his heart... but he will take anything she can give even if it is a short term friends with bene's situationship with a bunch of rules.
Haven knows she is playing with fire getting closer to Axel again and she is likely to get burned but she has been lonely and if she can be with Axel for a limited time then they go back to being friends that's doable right?
This is a 2nd chances (ex best) friends to lovers situation with a lot of humor/witty banter. While I really enjoyed this book I had a hard time with Axel at the beginning being so hot and cold with Haven when she first moved back to town he was really giving her mixed signals and it was his fault they were in the current position friendship wise I get he had his own reasons but they have both grown up a bit you would think that he would know how to be nicer especially since he wanted to get back on her good side... and hopefully on her "really good" side.
Haven was a fierce and sassy FMC but she really let Axel off the hook super quick before she was letting him have spicy times with her multiple times. Other than those initial things this was a quick read I really enjoyed our lead characters together and their conversations and interactions with their friend group added some additional comedy, Axel our Firefighter also has some great co-workers (maybe some of these guys will get their own book who doesn't love a man in a uniform).
We all know how these situationship type relationships end up they can keep it casual until they can't... and we love that spark that leads to full on fire! Yes please sign me right up. This book had me rooting for these two friends to make up and find their happily ever after.
