S.E Dymek Falling in Love with Death

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/230457815-falling-in-love-with-death

I don't usually read darker romance but I have been giving different romance genre's a try this year and I joined a few book clubs, this was the indie author club pick for October 2025 I had a spot free up in my KU and picked this up to get ready for the read along... but I might have gotten ahead of myself because I started reading it early and couldn't put it down.

Ryan is in a horrible car crash with her mother only 1 soul was slated to be taken to the afterlife to cross over (Ryan's) but when Silas (MMC and Grim Reaper) gets to the scene of the accident Ryan's mother begs for him to save her daughters life in exchange for her own he does need to collect a soul after all.  Normally Silas plays by the rules and is excellent at his job of helping souls cross over in the after life but as soon as he touches Ryan he can't take her... in fact she quickly becomes his obsession he needs to do everything in his power to protect her.

It's been about a year since the accident that took her mother's life she has been living with her best friend Will and working at a local book shop trying to do the best she can to get through day to day life without her mother.  She continues to have really vivid nightmares where she is in a strange field, what she doesn't know is that this is the in between since she was touched by death she now has a closer connection to this area especially in dreams.  She begins to see strange women in black and hear loud crying (banshees) thinking that she may be suffering from one too many head injuries she at first brushes it off as nothing... but of course there is more going on.

Silas continues to watch Ryan from a far making sure that she is safe only there are others working against him, Nyx the goddess of night has been plotting a way out back to the human world she has been stuck too long in the in between after being banished for wanting too much power... she needs Ryan for her plan to work and she begins to enlist banshee's (who seem to listen to her) and a few different demon's to ensure Ryan ends up where she needs to be dead and in her line of sight she needs to be able to speak with her and touch her.

Ryan keeps having dangerous things happen that lead to Silas needing to act quickly to save her and in this way he introduces himself to Ryan as a detective.  Ryan's room mate Will has been friend zoned hard core and you see him struggle with this throughout the book, Ryan only sees Will as a friend but she is intrigued by the handsome detective that she feels like she already knows somehow.

This story has many twists and turns with characters switching sides and keeps you wondering what will happen next.  There is also a side love story with Enemies --> more with demons Balor and Kere (Silas's sister).  You even get to see that even death has a friend Charon (his job is to take the souls to across the river that the grim reaper brings to him).

Ryan is fierce and loyal she is as drawn to Silas as much as he is to her.  Silas hasn't felt anything in a long time but one touch from Ryan has him feeling everything and it's addicting but will they ever be able to be together when there are so many dark forces working to keep them apart?

Probably the first book I've read where I am rooting for a dark character (death, Balor & Kere) to get a happily ever after.  A lot of drama and tension present in the book with Nyx will she succeed with her evil plans?

I wouldn't have picked this book up on my own but I'm so glad I was introduced to it!  Really enjoyable fast paced story that kept me turning pages and on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next for all of the characters.

*Grim Reaper MMC  *Human FMC  *Dark Romance  *Good vs. Evil  *Indie Author *banter

*Demons/gods/goddesses  *Fated Mates  *the in between  *souls and guidance in the after life

*Read your trigger warnings this is a darker romance with some spice (on the lighter side of spice)
