Book Blog:

She’s a sea witch wanted for murder. He’s a pirate hunter determined to capture her. But in a world of hidden treasures and deadly secrets, their attraction may be the most dangerous thing of all.
With weather magic on her side, Vice is the bane of the high seas, but she isn’t captain of her own ship. Yet. If she can prove herself and get a command, she’ll be in charge of her own fate at last.

To pay off his family’s debts, Knigh Blackwood hunts pirates for the Royal Navy. When the bounty on Lady Vice grows, he’s determined to make her face justice, even if that means beating her at her own game.

Forced to work closely, neither can deny the tension that crackles every time they’re together. As they face battles at sea and scheming crewmates, they find hints of a long-lost treasure that could be the answer to both their problems.

But treasure isn’t the only thing buried. Secrets best-forgotten lie in wait that could blast them apart forever. And the closer Vice and Knigh grow, the greater the threat—to her life and to his family. Because for one to succeed, the other must fail.

Tropes:

*Romantasy *Pirates *Magic *Fae *Sea Witch *Enemies --> More *Slow burn *Spice *Secrets

*Hidden identity *Betrayal *forced proximity *Miscommunication/no Communication

*Fantasy *cliffhanger *cute feline side kick *Bingo Board: Pirates

Thoughts:

Knigh Blackwood (MMC) works for the Royal Navy hunting pirates, he is good at his job and determined to capture and turn in infamous female pirate Lady Vice she has a decent sized bounty and it would help pay down some of his families debts.

Lady Vice while she has become quite famous recently for her misdeeds... some true, some exaggerated or made up she has been on board for several years doing her best to learn all she can so she can one day be the captain of her own ship and crew... this is going to happen she knows it her captain promised her a ship and she is looking forward of taking charge of her own destiny.

While as far as she is concerned who she was before is long behind her she was once a lady and her father had arranged a marriage for her... but she didn't want that running off and marrying another man he died shortly after they wed now she just longs for freedom.

Knigh finds Lady Vice and her crew makes a deal with the captain that if they work for the queen their crimes will be forgiven... only he has some ulterior motives (at first).

This book has total Enemies --> Lovers vibes especially when Knigh comes on board the ship and the Captain gives him Lady Vice's room... wtf!

The more Knigh gets to know Lady Vice the more he realizes that maybe he can't turn her in after all... but when he learns some additional news, maybe he wasn't really getting to know her at all?

If you are looking for epic world building and telling of the magic system I didn't see it in this the Fae and Fae blessed/touched have magic but it isn't explained how they get it all that well, and it's different powers for different people, like Lady Vice is a "sea witch" and can control the weather and the tides and waves.  They are kind of in an alternate version of Earth's 1800's with Fae and magic.

I felt that Vice was overly confident/arrogant about how clever she was which led to her not thinking anyone was on to her... it came off as immature and naive, not sure how old she is supposed to be but she came off as a younger character.

Vice and Knigh were cute together but a lot of their struggles later in the book could have been eliminated with a simple conversation, the no communication/miscommunication was heavy in the back end of the book.

I never truly felt connected to either lead character they did start to grow on me towards the end but by that time I was not really all that invested in the story.  I did like Barnacle the ship cat.

I never knew at any given time how much time had passed, so I'm not sure how fast or slow the relationship was building leaving me to pacing issues (maybe?)

Vice... girl! she puts herself into dangerous situations when she doesn't need to, stop, if you are in danger you don't have time for this nonsense!!  She also at times put others in danger without much thought in her quest to be made a captain.

A big plot point is the Captain of the ship Vice is crew member on is obsessed with Sir Francis Drake and finding his "lost" treasure he is always hoping to get a clue as to where it might be hidden even though many say it doesn't exist at all or if it does it was given to his family.  But leaves you to wonder if he is given the opportunity to earn a fortune a different way without having to search for something that might not even be there... would he go for it?

This book had some interesting tropes, if you enjoy romantasy, hidden identities, pirates, betrayal, enemies --> lovers and forced proximity you might enjoy picking this one up.

I might continue the series at some point to see what happens next as this ended on a cliffhanger but it probably won't be high up on my list.

Have you read this one?  what did you think?
